                                Fireweed(Epilobium augustifolium)
 a.k.a. willow herb
 
                        
                          
                            Fireweed 
                              is a perennial with pinky purple flowers that grows 
                              from 0.5 to 3 metres in height.  
                        
                          
                            
  
                              
                               
                                LEAVES: 
                                   
                                - 
                                  long (up to 8 inches long), narrow, lance-shaped 
                                   
                                - 
                                  veins can be observed on the underside  
                                - 
                                  alternate on the stem  
                               
  
                                 FLOWERS:- 
                                  rose, purple or mauve, large  
                                - 
                                  many clustered along the top part of the reddish 
                                  stems  
                                - 
                                  yellow stamens  
                                - 
                                  3 cm. or 1.2 in. across  
                                - 
                                  Fireweed flowers are evident throughout the 
                                  summer  
                                
                                FRUIT: 
                                   
                                - 
                                  narrow seed pods that split and release a multitude 
                                  of tiny, fluffy, white seeds  
                                - 
                                  green or red  
                                
                                HABITAT: 
                                   
                                - 
                                  Fireweed is found throughout BC  
                                - 
                                  Fireweed likes burned or logged areas or along 
                                  roadsides  
                                - 
                                  Fireweed is found in coniferous, deciduous or 
                                  mixed forests, meadows  
                                - 
                                  low to subalpine elevations  
                                
                                FASCINATING 
                                  FACTS:  
                                - 
                                  pioneer growth after a fire or disturbance - 
                                  leading to its common name  
                                - 
                                  Fireweed it is the floral emblem of the Yukon 
                                   
                                - 
                                  bees produce a delicious honey from the flowers
